This month, we have tips from Phoebe Sherman of Girl Gang Craft, a female forward community for creatives and entrepreneurs.
Here are Phoebeās pointers for filming yourself on camera āĀ something more and more of us had to get used to over the past year. Pandemic or not, itās a great skill to have in the digital space. The good news? You donāt have to be perfect.
Comparison doesnāt have to be the thief of joy
byĀ Monique
I havenāt hugged a friend for months, but Iāve compared myself to plenty of strangers during that time.Ā
Comparing yourself to others isnāt always a bad thing, but when you compare yourself to someone you think is further along or more successful in life, the negative feelings can quickly follow. And while I donāt think social media is totally responsible, it definitely doesnāt help. Whether itās seeing someone elseās creative side hustle and wondering why I havenāt spent more time thinking about my own, or wishing I felt safe enough to travel to a desolate desert compound for the weekend, itās easy to feel like Iām not keeping up with everyone when scrolling through my feed.
But ādoing it (solely) for the āgramā isnāt my jam and if youāve ever felt the same way, try these tips:
Remind yourself that most people only share the highlight reels of their lives on social media. Youāre more likely to see the top 2-3 creative concepts than the 20+ ones that didnāt make the cut.Ā
Stop, recalibrate & listen. If comparisons have you feeling meh, take a minute to recognize and understand your emotions before trying to overcome or ignore them. Maybe feeling envious about someoneās creative idea can inspire you to open that sketchbook again. Or try flipping the script and celebrating a strangerās success instead of tying it to your own imperfections.
Take a break. If you follow accounts that donāt spark joy or youāre finding it challenging to turn down the noise, try reducing or eliminating your social media activity and spending more time with the things you do love. You might be surprised what you prioritize when no oneās looking.
Have you tried something similar? Do you follow anyone that posts more honestly about their lives? Weād love to hear it!
