This month is reminding us all how uncertain life is, so we thought it would be wise to ask our friend, artist/writer Nasimeh b.e for some tips on how to lean into it.

The fallacy of being self-made
by Kiran
Standing in line at the grocery store, I saw a middle-aged man wearing a denim jacket, plastered with mottos like “it’s all about the benjamins” and “self-made man.” It was nothing I hadn’t seen before, only this time it was from someone struggling and fumbling for change. Not exactly the guy you’d expect to be wearing that.
The contrast was too much to ignore. The U.S. has a cultural identity that encourages this type of thinking — really anything promotes freedom and individuality, even to a fault. And I think this is one of those times because there is no such thing as being self-made.
Sure, some people overcome more obstacles than others or have more success starting their own business, but to act like they had no help is suspect. Just because you didn’t come from money or go to college doesn’t mean you are self-made. Not receiving any support from your family or friends doesn’t mean that either. It’s still likely you had encouragement and support from somewhere — a stranger, your first customer, a book, or even a TikTok video (watch the video intro of this newsletter if you haven’t). Even if you don’t think any of this applies, you still come from 9 months of your momma’s hard work and someone making sure you survived your childhood.
You might say “Why does this matter? You’re just getting too caught up in the language of what may motivate someone.” But mindset matters. Acting like this planet and universe aren’t interconnected harms us all. We rely on each other. From the plants that feed us and the animals we consume, to the healthcare industry developing vaccines. The person who gave us our first break or bought our product when we had absolutely zero reviews. It matters because once you understand this, you become a little more grateful and willing to help when you see the opportunity. It’s a beautiful cycle that we don’t always understand and certainly doesn’t always go smoothly, but it’s the reason why any of us get to thrive.
This isn’t to say we shouldn’t celebrate our individual achievements. But let’s be a little more humble. We’ve all probably had a bit more help than we think.
