“Ain’t nobody got time for that” has become ubiquitous, but Kevin Hart sure speaks some truth here. Let’s start this newsletter off with a dose of positivity.
Believe you belong
by Kiran
The final installment of our How to Be Creative series is about recognizing you are creative. I want to elaborate on that with something I’ve found helpful — the idea that you need to believe that you already belong.
It may sound counterintuitive or like you are skipping over the work that goes into reaching your goals. After all, claiming you’re an Academy Award winning actor doesn’t make it so.
But there is value in setting that intention and deciding that’s exactly what’s going to happen (for whatever you want to achieve). Because when you embody that, your mind takes notice. You subconsciously start developing habits and behave in a way that’s consistent with a person who has reached that level.
If you don’t see yourself as an artist, you probably will have a hard time building the habits needed to become one. If you don’t see yourself as a person who’s in shape, you probably will have a hard time maintaining the diet and exercise needed to get there. If you don’t see yourself as someone who’s financially stable, you probably never will be. The lists goes on.
Your identity is a powerful concept. It sets the tone for what you will be able to accomplish. This is precisely the reason that representation is so important. We need to see someone “like us” doing something to believe that we can do it too. There is always the first person to do it, but many others standing at the edge needing a little nudge in the right direction.
